Christopher Seaman

Director, Symphony Australia Conductor Development Program

Christopher Seaman is Music Director of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

During 1987-1998, he was Conductor-in-Residence with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, with whom he still works regularly, and he has enjoyed recent engagements with the Pittsburgh Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic and Minnesota Orchestras.

Until 2004 he was Music Director of the Naples (Florida) Philharmonic Orchestra.

Christopher Seaman has appeared regularly in Europe with such orchestras as the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Het Gelders Orkest (Arnhem Philharmonic), Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Brno Philharmonic, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bergen Philharmonic which included an outstanding performance of Elgar's King Olaf.

In recent seasons Christopher Seaman has enjoyed regular visits to Australia, conducting the Sydney Symphony, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and The Queensland Orchestra.

In the UK, Christopher Seaman has held the position of Principal Conductor with both the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Northern Sinfonia and has worked regularly with the Royal Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philhamonic, Bournemouth Symphony, Philharmonia, Royal Scottish National, Ulster, New Queen's Hall and the various BBC Orchestras.

Christopher Seaman makes a point of encouraging young talent and has a long association with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

He has been Course Director of the Symphony Australia Conductor Development program since 2003. He has conducted the televised finals of the Geza Anda Competition with the Tonhalle Orchestra of Zurich and the European tours of the Australian Youth and Chicago Youth Orchestras - all of which have included concerts in the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam as well as in other major venues.

In 2003 and 2004 he was part of the conducting faculty of the prestigious Aspen Music Festival and School in Colorado.

Christopher Seaman has conducted two recordings with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of music by Vaughan Williams and Delius, and has also recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.

In 2006 Christopher Seaman conducted the Grand Final of the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

In 2008 he will conduct both The Queensland Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
