Lutz Köhler
Lutz Köhler studied bassoon, piano, composition and conducting at the Hannover Hochschule für Musik und Theater where he developed a particular interest in chamber music. As a bassoonist he has recorded extensively and given masterclasses all around the world. His pupils have won major competitions in Tokyo, Munich, Belgrade and Colmar.
As a conductor Lutz has worked with a great number of German orchestras including Deutsches Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Radiosinfonieorchestras Frankfurt, Saarbrücken, and the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted at festivals such as Luzern, Menuhin; Festival Gstaad, Berlin, Dresden, Rheingau; Prix Italia, Aldeburgh (GB), Belgrade, Sevilla and Miami. Lutz has guest-conducted in the USA, Italy, Switzerland, France, Scandinavia, Holland, Poland, Great Britain, Yugoslavia, Spain, New Zealand, Asia and South America, as well as in the major music centres of Germany - Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Leipzig, Dresden, Stuttgart and Cologne where he frequently returns.
He has recorded a series of ten CDs with the brass ensemble of the Frankfurt Radiosinfonieorchester - which were acclaimed highly by the international press - and major Mozart works with the Radiosinfonieorchester Saarbrücken. He has also recorded with the Deutsches Sinfonieorchester Berlin.
Lutz Köhler has been Director of the European Union Youth Orchestra for 25 years, Chief guest conductor and Honorary Member at the Royal Academy of Music London, Distinguished Fellow of Conducting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama Glasgow, Board Member and Chairman of the Jury at the Munich International Music Competition and an Honorary Member of the German Music Council. He has been Professor at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover for 25 years and in 1999 he was appointed Professor for Conducting and artistic director of the Symphony Orchestra at the prestigious Universität der Künste Berlin.
He regularly works in Spain, the Baltic States and has his own series of concerts at the Karajan Hall Berlin. In February 2007 he conducted Handel's "Messiah" on a tour to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Berlin and Potsdam. In April 2009 he will conduct in Vienna's "Konterthaus" a concert with works by Schumann and Brahms.
Lutz's repertoire includes music from Baroque until today. His schedule for the next years is extremely busy with conducting in many countries around the world.
