Manuscript Collection
With a history dating back to the early 1900s, the ABC played an important role in Australian musical life by commissioning new Australian compositions for performance and broadcast. The commissioning tradition continues to the present day through the work of Symphony Australia.
The National Music Library acquired many of the resulting musical scores and performance parts, and remains a significant resource for Australian music.
In 2000, a large number of these original manuscripts were transferred to the National Library of Australia in Canberra for preservation. The Symphony Australia Collection as it is known now resides at the National Library of Australia and includes the works of over 78 Australian composers and arrangers.
