2008 Strings Finalist announced
All the tickets to the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards Strings Final had been snapped up and there were still queues trying to get tickets at the door! The full house generated a real buzz of expectation at the Adelaide Town Hall on the evening of Thursday 19 June, before the concert had even begun. And when Vladimir Verbitsky conducted the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and four wonderful strings players, the atmosphere was electric. The audience was treated to Ji Won Kim playing Bartok's Violin Concerto No.2, David Campbell playing Bottesini's Concerto No.2 for Double Bass, Rebecca Chan playing Korngold's Violin Concerto, and Zhu Wen playing Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto.
And the winner was Rebecca Chan! She receives $5,000, and is also the recipient of the Nelly Apt Scholarship for 2008, administered by the Music and Opera Singers Trust. She will perform at the Grand Final at Hamer Hall on 19 September, with the MSO conducted by Arvo Volmer.
The concert was broadcast live on ABC Classic FM, and will be repeated later this year. It was recorded for broadcast on ABC Television's Sunday Arts program.
Symphony Australia would like to thank all the many people who made last night's concert happen. Especially... everyone at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra! Thank you - it was a brilliant concert. And, our adjudicators, Marshall McGuire, Jim Koehne, Professor David Lockett, Nathan Waks and Vladimir Verbitsky. Thank you to the ABC for the smooth running of all matters to do with broadcasting and filming, especially Damien Beaumont, and to everyone at Symphony Australia. Thank you also to our Stage II adjudicators, Virginia Taylor and Stephen Snelleman.
